Privacy Policy
Last updated: February 2026
Cellar ("we", "our", or "us"), developed by Shankar Dutt, is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application.
Information We Collect
Cellar is designed with privacy in mind. We collect minimal data necessary to provide our services:
- Collection Data: Information about wines and spirits you add to your collection, including names, vintages, regions, and tasting notes. This data is stored locally on your device.
- Photos: Images you take or select for your bottles are stored locally on your device and optionally in your iCloud account.
- Label Scanning: When you use the label scanner feature, images are processed on-device using Apple's Vision framework. No images are sent to external servers.
- Barcode Scanning: When you scan a barcode, the barcode number is sent to Open Food Facts (openfoodfacts.org), a free, open database of food products. This lookup returns product information to auto-fill bottle details. Only the barcode number is transmitted; no personal data is shared.
- Purchase Information: When you subscribe to Cellar Premium, Apple handles all payment processing. We receive only confirmation of your subscription status.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide and maintain the Cellar app
- Process your Premium subscription
- Send notifications about your drinking windows (if enabled)
- Sync your collection across devices via iCloud (if enabled)
- Respond to your support requests
Data Storage
Your collection data is stored locally on your device using Apple's secure storage mechanisms. If you enable iCloud sync, your data is also stored in your private iCloud account, which is protected by Apple's security measures.
We do not have access to your iCloud data. Only you can access your synced collection data through devices signed into your Apple ID.
Data Sharing
We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to third parties. Your wine collection data stays on your devices and in your iCloud account.
We may disclose your information if required by law or to protect our rights and the safety of our users.
Third-Party Services
Cellar uses the following services:
- Apple App Store: For app distribution and subscription management
- Apple iCloud: For optional cloud sync functionality
- Apple Vision Framework: For on-device label recognition
- Open Food Facts: For barcode product lookup (only barcode numbers are transmitted)
Price lookup features (Vivino, Wine-Searcher, Wine.com, CellarTracker) open links in your browser. No data is sent from the app to these services - you control any interactions on their websites.
